MOBILES MAY BE DEATH SENTENCE
Widespread, unchecked use of mobile telephones could potentially pose a greater threat to human health than asbestos or smoking, according to a Canberra neurosurgeon.
Vini Khurana held a 14-month investigation into the link between heavy, long-term use of mobile telephones and the development of malignant brain tumours, reviewing more than 100 international studies on the subject.
"There is currently enough evidence and technology available to warrant industry and governments alike in taking immediate steps to reduce exposure of consumers to mobile phone related electromagnetic radiation and to make consumers clearly aware of potential dangers and how to use this technology sensibly and safely," Dr Khurana said in 69-page paper published on-line.
"It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children."
"A malignant brain tumour represents a life-ending diagnosis in the vast majority of [cases]."
Dr Khurana said there was a "significant and increasing" body of evidence that linked mobile phone use and some brain tumours. "The elevated risk increased odds appears to be in the order of two- to four-fold," he said.
"Electromagnetic radiation ... can heat the side of the head or pulse it non-thermally and potentially ... interact with its organic electrical content the brain," he said.
"Bluetooth devices and unshielded headsets can convert the user's head into an effective, potentially self-harming antenna." Consumers should limit their use of these accessories.
"Unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps to openly acknowledge and intervene in this situation even while awaiting definitive confirmation by large and well-constructed multi-centre studies worldwide malignant brain tumour incidence and its associated death rate will be observed globally to rise within a decade from now. "By which time it may be far too late to meaningfully intervene, especially for those who are currently children and young adults."

20 international scientists, most of them cancer specialists, launch a call against the dangers of cell phones. According to the scientists: "We are today in the same situation as fifty years ago for asbestos and tobacco. Either nothing is done, and one accepts a risk, or one admits there is a beam of worrying scientific arguments," explains Thierry Bouillet, cancer specialist.
Other signatories include Dr. Bernard Asselain, chief of the cancer biostatistics service at Institute Curie, director of the department of preventive and predictive medicine at the National Institute of Cancer in Milan (Italy).

GROWING CONCERN OVER SAFETY OF CELLPHONES FOR CHILDREN
The French health minister, Roselyne Bachelot, has taken such concerns public, issuing an alert in January urging parents to limit use, and reduce children's telephone calls to no more than six minutes.
I've alerted parents about the use of mobile telephones because it's absurd for young children to have them." Other health authorities in Britain, Russia and France all urge precautions.

SET INTERPHONE FREE
It’s time to release the results of the Interphone study, the largest and most expensive cell phone epidemiological study ever attempted. Any further delay would be close to scandalous.
The real reason, we believe, is that the study shows that there are tumor risks following long-term use of a mobile phone and that some of the Interphone researchers don't want to go public…the worldwide wireless industry — now worth on the order of a trillion dollars — and the governments that tax them are applying pressure, subtle or otherwise, to keep the lid on.
This 1995 study was based on the pooled data from five Interphone countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the U.K. Last year, researchers from those same five countries reported a parallel elevated, ipsilateral risk for brain tumors after ten years.
Add to those five, the German and the French Interphone groups. Both have also reported increased risks of brain tumors after ten years…A few weeks ago, the French Ministry of Health called for precaution with respect to the use of mobile phones by children.
Two billion cell phone users deserve to know what only a select few know now.
THE NEW YORK TIMES
The American Journal of Epidemiology has published data from Israel finding a 58 percent higher risk of parotid gland tumors among heavy cellphone users. Also last year, a Swedish analysis of 16 studies in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed a doubling of risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma after 10 years of heavy cellphone use.
“More and more kids are using cellphones,” said Dr. Paul J. Rosch, clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry at New York Medical College. “They may be much more affected. Their brains are growing rapidly, and their skulls are thinner.”
THE TORONTO STAR
On Tuesday May 27 (2008) the issue grabbed the spotlight on CNN’s Larry King Live, where most experts expressed concern about the potential health impacts of using cellphones beyond a decade.
Dr. Keith Black, the neurosurgeon who treated high-profile U.S. lawyer Johnnie Cochran before Cochran died of a brain tumour in 2005, was among them.
One 2007 research paper, looked at glioma cases from studies conducted in five North European countries, including some data from Interphone. The paper found a significantly increased risk of developing glioma after cellphone use of more than 10 years.
Dr. Lennart Hardell, looked at 10 European studies. "We conclude that this meta-analysis gave a consistent pattern of an association between mobile phone use and ipsilateral glioma and acoustic neuroma," after 10 years or more of use.
In February, Israeli scientist Dr. Siegal Sadetzki and her team of Interphone researchers published a study showing that heavy cellphone users had a 50 per cent greater risk of developing a tumour of the main salivary gland – or parotid – on the same side of the head where they hold the phone, compared with those who didn't use cellphones.

CELLPHONE CANCER LINK FOUND BY ISRAELI SCIENTIST
Dr. Sadetzki, a physician, epidemiologist and lecturer at Tel Aviv University, published the results of a study recently in the American Journal of Epidemiology, in which she and her colleagues found that heavy cell phone users were subject to a higher risk of benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland.
"This unique population has given us an indication that cell phone use is associated with cancer." Sadetzki predicts that, over time, the greatest effects will be found in heavy users and children.

The brains of young children absorb twice as much as RF energy from a cell phone as those of adults, according to a set of new calculations carried out by Joe Wiart's research group at France Telecom in the suburbs of Paris.
"[Our] analysis confirms that peripheral brain tissues of children seem to be higher exposed than the peripheral brain tissue of adults," Wiart concludes in a paper that appears in the July 7, 2008 issue of Physics in Medicine and Biology. "Children are not simply small adults." Wiart explained in an interview with Microwave News. "Their skin and their skulls are thinner than those of adults, and their ears are smaller too," he said. "Given these differences, the higher SAR for children is not surprising,"

KNOW NOW
People who have used cell phones for at least 10 years might have an increased risk of developing a rare brain tumor, according to a study published Wednesday in the international journal Epidemiology.
A team of researchers at Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, found almost a fourfold increase of the tumors, known as acoustic neuromas, on the side of the head where the phone was most often held.
The work was done as part of the World Health Organization's cell phone research agenda, and experts in the field said it must be taken seriously and is likely to rekindle consumer worries about the risks of using the phones.
Dr. Henry Lai, research professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington in Seattle, also said the Karolinska study is not the first to show a link between cell phones and acoustic neuromas.
"Another Swedish researcher, Dr. [Lennart] Hardell found similar results in 2002," Lai said," so this is, in effect, a replication. I think the data are quite solid and are cause for concern on long-term cell phone use."
Lai's own research found DNA breaks in the brain cells of animals exposed to radio-frequency radiation, results that were first published in 1994, and have been repeated by others, he said.
"We looked at DNA damage in animals, not in humans, and found that cell phone radiation can damage DNA," he said. The body's immune system has the ability to repair DNA breaks, but sometimes it can make a mistake and cause a mutation, which could be the first step toward cancer, Lai said.
Sam Milham of Olympia, Wash., an epidemiologist and pioneer in studying the effects of electromagnetic radiation on humans, said it usually takes 20 years or more for solid tumors to develop.
"I'm actually astonished that they found anything like this early," Milham said. "If that energy can do that to normal nerve tissue cells, what can it do to adjacent brain cells? I think it's the tip of a big iceberg, and the peak could be at 25 years past exposure.
"What's really alarming is that in the last five years an enormous number of people started using cell phones, including kids, so I think this is just the beginning of it.
RCR WIRELESS NEWS
WASHINGTON—A new Finnish study concludes mobile phone radiation could lead to cancer by disrupting normal cell activity and interfering with the blood brain barrier's ability to block out toxins and other potentially harmful substances.
The research, led by Prof. Darius Leszczynski of Finland's Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority and published in the May issue of the scientific journal Differentiation, received widespread media coverage in the United Kingdom last week.
"We postulate that these events [molecular changes in human brain cells] over a long period of time might become a health hazard because of the possible accumulation of brain tissue damage. Furthermore, our hypothesis suggests that other brain damaging factors may co participate in mobile phone radiation induced effects," stated the scientific abstract in Differentiation.
Changes in human brain cell formation were seen after one hour of exposure to GSM 900 MHz mobile phone radio frequency radiation.

The rate of death from brain cancer among handheld phone users was higher than the rate of brain cancer death among those who used non-handheld phones that were away from their head.
The risk of acoustic neuroma, a benign tumour of the auditory nerve that is well in range of the radiation coming from a phone's antenna system, was fifty percent higher in people who reported using cell phones for six years or more, moreover, that relationship between the amount of cell phone use and this tumour appeared to follow a dose-response curve;
The risk of rare neuro epithelial tumors on the outside of the brain was more than doubled, a statistically significant risk increase, in cell phone users as compared to people who did not use cell phones;
Laboratory studies looking at the ability of radiation from a phone's antenna system to cause functional genetic damage were definitively positive, and were following a dose-responsive relationship.

GERMANS WORRIED ABOUT THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF MOBILES
A new poll shows most Germans are convinced their mobiles are a health threat and worry more about so-called 'Elektrosmog' than terrorism. There are now more mobile phones in Germany than there are Germans and a new poll shows most Germans are convinced their mobiles are slowly killing them. A whopping 55 per cent said they believe cell phones emit harmful levels of electromagnetic and low-level microwave radiation.
And that Elektrosmog percentage level was nationwide, both rural and urban. In urban areas the angst levels are much higher. In the major port of Hamburg, which has a population of nearly 2 million, Emnid researchers found that 82 per cent are convinced their mobiles pose a serious health threat.
Researchers say that long-term exposure to low-level phone emissions at very close range resulted in an elevation of membrane temperature to the boiling point of water.
"That indicates an emission level 100 times higher than previously thought possible," said Max Planck Institute director Markus Antonietti.
The findings allegedly show that localized radiation can result in even higher temperatures - up to 10,000 degrees Celsius - for exceedingly brief periods of a fraction of a second in very isolated cell structures.
"And the energy from mobiles disrupts molecules so thoroughly that cell membranes can in fact rupture," he added.
New reports of the shocking findings were plastered over tabloid front pages and were trumpeted on radio and television newscasts

NEED A COOKER? USE YOUR CELL PHONE
Recently, news media has reported a study showing the radiation from cell phones is so full of energy they can be used to cook eggs. In the experiment, researchers placed one egg in a porcelain cup, and put one cell phone on one side and another cell phone on the other. The researchers then called from one cell phone to another and kept the cell phones on call after connecting.
During the first 15 minutes, nothing changed. After 25 minutes, however, the eggshell started to become hot and at 40 minutes, the surface of the egg became hard and bristled. Researchers found the protein in the egg had become solid although the egg yolk was still in liquid form. After 65 minutes, the whole egg was well cooked.

OVER 1 IN 10 COMPLAIN ABOUT CELL SICKNESS
According to a survey by Rep. Suh Hae-suk at the governing Uri Party, 10.9 percent of 1,034 respondents said that they felt physical disorders due to cell phone usage.
In addition, 93 percent of respondents said electromagnetic fields (EMF) from cell phones are harmful or affect human health in some ways while just 0.5 percent were against the idea.
In this climate, Suh urged the government to come up with measures geared toward reducing risks of microwaves stemming from mobile handsets.
The Korean government has concluded that the amount of EMF coming from cell phones is negligible but more and more overseas reports start raising its potential risks.
For example, scientists from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne recently found people's response times slowed during a 30-minute mobile phone call.
Also some doctors point their fingers at the cell phone microwaves as one of the major triggers of brain tumors.

LONG-TERM MOBILE PHONE USE RAISES BRAIN TUMOR RISK
Researchers at the Swedish National Institute for Working Life said they looked at the mobile phone use of 905 people between the age of 20 and 80 who had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and found a link.
Kjell Mild, who led the study, said the figures meant that heavy users of mobile phones, for instance of who make mobile phone calls for 2,000 hours or more in their life, had a 240 percent increased risk for a malignant tumor on the side of the head the phone is used.

THE LINK BETWEEN CELL PHONES AND BRAIN TUMORS
Doctor Black, who's the head of neurosurgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, believes one day science will catch up to what he's seeing with his own patients.
"We know that people who use cell phones a lot also complain of headaches, difficulty with concentration, with memory. This is a microwave antenna. So, you're essentially cooking the brain when you hold the receiver right next to your brain," said Black.
Still, Doctor Black points out something else that troubles him. Cochran's tumor was on the left side of his brain. He was known to hold the cell phone on that same side. Dr. Black's experience with his own patients.
"We do know that there's a significant correlation between the site that someone uses their cell phone on and the site that you develop the brain tumor on," said Black.
